Science Lab Experiment: Specific Gravity

Demonstration: Specific Gravity

Object: To find the specific gravity of a substance. Specific gravity is a term used to describe the relation of the weight of objects to the weight of an equal volume of water.

Materials: graduated cylinder, beaker, overflow can, triple beam balance, rock sample

Diagram:
overflow can

Method: The materials were set up as shown in the diagram. The rock was first weighed. Then the volume of an equal amount of water was found and recorded. This water was weighed and the result recorded.

Data: Weight of the rock sample = 148 grams Volume of water displaced = 46 ml Volume of rock sample = 46 ml

Observations: The weight of the rock was found to be 3.2 times the weight of water.

Conclusions: A specific gravity of 3.2 for the rock sample was determined.
