Science Lab Experiment: Properties of Three Elements

Demonstration: Characteristics of Three Elements

Object: To determine the characteristics of three elements: calcium, phosphorus, and sulfur

Materials: phosphorus, calcium, sulfur, long-handled spoon, beaker, alcohol lamp, matches

Diagram:
three elements

Method A piece of white phosphorus was exposed to the air. Sulfur was heated using a special long handled spoon. A piece of calcium was added to water.

Observations: The phosphorus burst into flame when exposed to air. The yellow sulfur burned with a blue flame and had a choking odour. The calcium smoked, moved violently and disappeared. The water turned cloudy, indicating that a chemical reaction had taken place.

Conclusions: Characteristics of three elements were determined. An element has one kind of atom and has its own characteristics.
