African-Canadian Studies is offered at the grade 11 level,
but it is available to grades 10 and 12 students, as well.
The course promotes African-Canadian education and includes
information respecting the history, heritage, culture, traditions,
and the contribution to society of African People. The course
focuses on the history of people of African descent in Canada.
It is presented in a challenging, dynamic and interesting manner.
It is divided into four basic units :

Pre-colonial African Society
- Transcontinental:
Evaluation and Change of the African Diaspora
- Pursuit
of Political and Economic Empowerment
- Current
Issues and Challenges Facing African Nova Scotians
The course is designed to equip students with a sound
understanding of the global experience, local achievements
and contribution of the Canadian people of the African descent.
The course uses an interdisciplinary approach integrating the
concepts of geography, history, economics, political science
and sociology to highlight the experiences , struggles and
life stories of people who have contributed to world history.
